About this stage

This stage of the French Way of the Way of Santiago connects Frómista with Carrión de los Condes, both in the province of Palencia (Castile and León, Spain). It is one of the flattest and simplest days of the entire French Way, in the heart of the Tierra de Campos, a cereal-growing region known as “the granary of Spain.”

The stage has an approximate distance of 19 km, with an average duration of about 4 and a half hours of walking, according to sources consulted. The distance can vary slightly depending on the guide and option chosen: Gronze indicates 18.8 km via the official route and other sources speak of 19–19.5 km. It is a stage of low difficulty, practically without elevation gain, via long and straight paths.

The official route runs beside the provincial road P-980, via a rectilinear pedestrian trail that links a succession of small villages. There is a variant highly recommended by many pilgrims, that of the Ucieza River (or Villovieco variant), which departs from the road and runs beside the riverbed, via a trail with trees and shade, before rejoining the official path. This variant adds little distance and is more pleasant.

The main villages of the day are Frómista (departure), Población de Campos, Revenga de Campos, Villarmentero de Campos, Villalcázar de Sirga, and Carrión de los Condes (final destination). The landscape is one of broad and monotonous horizons, with very little shade. The Jacobean importance of the stage is notable: it includes the Templar church of Santa María la Blanca de Villalcázar de Sirga and the rich Romanesque heritage of Carrión de los Condes. The general feeling is that of a comfortable and quick day physically, designed to calmly enjoy the villages and their heritage.

This is one of the easiest stages of the Way, but it is worth noting some aspects based on verified information:

Heat, the main enemy: as it is totally flat and with almost no shade, on hot days it can become difficult. It is best to leave early to avoid the central hours, wear a hat, sun protection, and carry sufficient water to hydrate frequently.
Consider the Ucieza River variant: upon leaving Población de Campos you can choose between the official path (beside the P-980, more monotonous) or the variant via Villovieco following the river, with trees and shade. It adds very little distance and is more pleasant, especially in summer. Both routes rejoin before Villalcázar de Sirga.
Simple supplies: the intermediate villages have services (bar, shop, rest areas with fountain), so it is not difficult to resupply with water and food. Still, it is wise to carry something for the sections between localities.
A stage for heritage: as it is short, it is worth taking time to visit the Church of Santa María la Blanca in Villalcázar de Sirga and, upon arrival, the monumental ensemble of Carrión de los Condes (churches and the monastery of San Zoilo).
For those cycling: it is a very cyclable stage, flat and with comfortable surface. The river variant can be somewhat uncomfortable on a bike depending on the terrain condition.
Accessibility: due to its flat profile, it is one of the most accessible stages, although the dirt surface and sections beside the road require caution. It is wise to confirm the specific condition of the path.

The route connects Frómista with Carrión de los Condes over about 19 km, with an estimated duration of about 4 and a half hours of walking, not counting stops.

The profile is practically flat from beginning to end, with no notable elevation changes. The departure from Frómista is via asphalt, following for several kilometers a sidewalk or trail beside the P-980 road. The route links several villages very close to each other. At the exit from Población de Campos, the Way bifurcates: the official route continues beside the road, while the Ucieza River variant (via Villovieco) departs to follow the riverbed via a tree-lined trail, rejoining the official route near Villalcázar de Sirga.

The terrain combines sections of trail beside the road and, in the variant, dirt trail beside the river with shade from willows, poplars, and black poplars. As a practical note, there is no physical difficulty: the key is managing monotony and sun exposure, and taking advantage of stops in the villages.

Itinerary

Km 0

· Frómista

Departure from the center, beside the Church of San Martín. You take, via asphalt, the pedestrian trail that follows the P-980 road in the direction of Carrión.

Around Km 3.4

· Población de Campos

First village of the stage. It has shelter, bar, and shop. It preserves the hermitage of Socorro (Romanesque) and the Church of Magdalene. At the exit, after crossing the Ucieza River, is the bifurcation between the official path and the river variant.

· Ucieza River Variant (optional)

Follows the riverbed via a tree-lined trail, passes through Villovieco and beside the hermitage of the Virgin of the River, and rejoins the main route before Villalcázar. More pleasant and with shade; adds little distance.

Around Km 6

· Revenga de Campos

(On the official route.) Small village with heraldic houses. A good point of passage, with no major deviations.

Around Km 8

· Villarmentero de Campos

A very small locality where both options rejoin. It preserves the Church of San Martín de Tours, with Mudéjar coffered ceiling. Rest areas are usually available.

Around Km 13

· Villalcázar de Sirga

Last stop before Carrión and one of the great surprises of the stage. The imposing Church of Santa María la Blanca stands out, of Templar origin. It has services. A good place to rest and visit the temple.

Final Km (around Km 19)

· Carrión de los Condes

From Villalcázar, about 6 km via trail beside the road lead to Carrión de los Condes. You enter a village of great Jacobean heritage, with all services. Stage ending.

What to See

Hermitage of Socorro and Church of Magdalene (Población de Campos)

The Hermitage of Socorro is a small construction of late Romanesque style (twelfth–thirteenth centuries). The parish Church of Magdalene, later, completes the heritage of this first village of the stage.

Church of San Martín de Tours (Villarmentero de Campos)

A parish temple constructed of adobe and stone, in which its Mudéjar coffered ceiling and a plateresque altarpiece stand out. It is the main point of interest of this small locality.

Hermitage of Our Lady of the River (river variant)

Hermitage situated on the Ucieza River trail, linked by tradition to the arrival of the relics of Saint Martín. It is a point of interest of the Villovieco variant.

Church of Santa María la Blanca (Villalcázar de Sirga)

The great monument of the stage. A temple-fortress of Templar origin, erected between the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, in a style of transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Its great portico of pointed arches with abundant sculptural decoration stands out, its polychrome Gothic sepulchers (among them that of Prince Philip, brother of Alfonso X), and its connection with the Cantigas of Santa María of Alfonso X the Wise, who dedicated several to the Virgin of Villasirga. It is declared a Heritage Asset of Cultural Interest.

Church of Santiago (Carrión de los Condes)

A temple known for its high-quality Romanesque doorway and frieze (late twelfth century), one of the most outstanding sculptural ensembles of Romanesque art on the Way. Much of the building was reconstructed after past damage.

Church of Santa María del Camino (or of Victory) (Carrión de los Condes)

A Romanesque church linked to the Jacobean tradition, situated at the entrance to the village, with doorway and sculptural decoration of interest.

Royal Monastery of San Zoilo (Carrión de los Condes)

An ancient monastery of medieval origin, linked to the order of Cluny, with a notable Renaissance cloister. Today it houses hotel and cultural uses, and part of the ensemble can be visited. It is one of the great monumental references of Carrión.

Localities

Frómista

Starting point of the stage. A village very linked to the Way, with all services and extensive heritage, whose great reference point is the Romanesque Church of San Martín. It is one of the cultural milestones of the Tierra de Campos.

Población de Campos

A small village of just over one hundred inhabitants, about 3.4 km from Frómista. It has shelter, bar, and shop. It preserves the Hermitage of Socorro (Romanesque) and the Church of Magdalene. At its exit is the bifurcation toward the river variant.

Villarmentero de Campos

A very small locality at the point where the official path and river variant rejoin. It preserves the Church of San Martín de Tours, with Mudéjar coffered ceiling. It usually has rest areas for pilgrims. (On the official route, you first pass through Revenga de Campos, with heraldic houses.)

Villalcázar de Sirga

A village of Templar origin, also known as Villasirga, with fewer than 200 inhabitants. Last stop before Carrión. Its great monument is the Church of Santa María la Blanca, of almost cathedral-like proportions. It has services for the pilgrim and a marked Jacobean tradition.

Carrión de los Condes

Stage ending. One of the most important populations on the Way in medieval times, where courts and synods came to be held. It offers all services and concentrates notable heritage: the churches of Santiago and Santa María del Camino and the Royal Monastery of San Zoilo. It is one of the great cultural milestones of the Tierra de Campos.
