Our guide will welcome you at the meeting point in Porto and we will travel to the city of Lamego. Depending on the time of arrival we will go for a walk in the town center, visiting the Castle at the hilltop, the 12th century Cathedral and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies which stands gracefully above town, with its hundreds of zigzagging stairs decorated with tiled friezes. The hike starts in Tabuaço, crossing the old town center, through small picturesque streets, until we enter the wine terraces. Our first stop will be a small wine producing state where we have the opportunity of a tasting, and after have our picnic. The hike continues along the slopes and terraces, until we reach Barcos, one of the traditional and emblematic Douro wine producing villages. From here we will have a transfer back to our hotel. During the morning we will visit the Côa Museum, where we will learn about the Paleolithic rock art engravings in the region. The Côa Valley is the center of a large open-air Prehistoric rock art site, classified as UNESCO World Heritage. In the afternoon, we will go for a hike through the surrounding valleys, crossing olive groves, and fields of almond trees and vineyards. The hike today will take us to valleys, toward the historical village of Marialva dating well before the 9th century AD. We start with a short transfer to Mêda and then follow ancient trails that link the villages, until we reach Marialva. Here, we will visit the castle and wander the old streets, discover the ramparts and the Castle Church, and finally continue the hike following an old trail to Longroiva. Longroiva is a spa village that also features historical sights and medicinal waters. From here we will have a transfer back to our hotel in Alijó.

Our first stop today will be in Sabrosa, the home town of Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer that organized the first circumnavigation of the Earth. After visiting his birth place, we will continue the hike towards the Pinhão river, one of the main tributaries of the Douro. Later a table awaits us with regional delicacies and wines. We will continue across Favaios plateau and vineyards, and finish the hike in our hotel. Transfer to Sabrosa: 25min

We will return to the village of Favaios, not because of its famous fortified wine, but to visit one of the oldest bakeries in the region. Here they still work manually, and the wood still heats the oven to bake this delicious bread that we’re going to have the opportunity to taste. The hike will continue following the ridge of the valley, with stunning views over the terraces and the river, until we reach the small village of Vale de Mendiz. After an early breakfast and transfer to Porto, we will begin a walking tour in downtown Porto. Portugal’s second-largest city gave its name to the country’s most well-known wine export and served as the center of its shipbuilding industry during the 14th and 15th centuries. Today’s walk will explore Porto’s narrow streets and ancient buildings from its historical center, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way, we’ll learn about the first Portuguese kings and the town’s centuries-long rule by local bishops. We will explore the river area, where we can see the traditional Rabelo boats anchored, and climb to the circular-shaped church and cloisters of the 15th-century Serra do Pilar monastery for memorable views of Porto’s downtown area.
