OVERVIEW

This route takes you along one of the most scenic paths of the Camino. Starting at the vibrant city of Porto, following north along the coast, passing vineyards, forests and green hills until reaching the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela.
Imagine yourself traveling in time, as you pass through medieval towns, cross ancient bridges, and experience the coast that saw the caravels coming and going during the age of discovery.  Starting in Porto, the path goes through the Minho region and Galicia until the heart of Santiago de Compostela. Get ready to spend seven days experiencing the best of what nature and history have to offer. You will discover the less travelled St. James Way – the  Caminho Português pela Costa, experiencing it away from the crowds and closer to yourself. What are you waiting for?

ITINERARY

Welcome to Portugal!

On your arrival to Porto we will meet at the hotel where you will be briefed on the tour, and receive the bycicles and equipments.

Enjoy the rest of the day in the city. We suggest you roam free, take a stroll along the Douro River, visit the Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, visit and shop at one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world – Lello & Irmão bookshop, climb the Clérigos Tower for a stunning view of the city, or immerse yourself in Porto´s dining scene, the options are endless.

Today´s ride takes you from Porto to the relaxed city of Esposende.

It starts at Porto´s Cathedral and crosses the old quarters towards the Douro River. From here on, the route follows north along the coastline. Halfway you find the city Vila do Conde, an important port city from the Age of Discovery. If you are curious about the voyages of those times take the opportunity to visit here a replica of a Portuguese Caravel. The path continues north along extensive golden sand beaches, and just before Esposende you will enter the beautiful nature reserve – Parque Natural do Litoral Norte. The day ends in Esposende where you will enjoy the city´s laid-back atmosphere.

Today you are going to cross the border into Galicia, Spain. The route continues along the coastline, with a short detour inland before arriving to Viana do Castelo. Viana is an important pilgrimage stop on the Portuguese Coastal Way to Saint James. Explore the city with its charming medieval center. It is worth to climb the hill towards the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia. The sights over the Lima Valley and the coast are amazing.

Back to the track, the route gets back to the coastline all the way up to Caminha, an elegant medieval town at the border with Spain. Crossing the Minho River, you will be at the fishing town of A Guarda, your home for the night.

From A Guarda town, is almost flat until Oia. Oia is place of an ancient monastery of the order of Cistercian that gave the name to this saint James Path alternative, the Monacal Path. From Oia onward the path run near cliffs, passes by cape Sillero, and follows the ancient Vereda Real until the old medieval Baiona. Just after Baiona the path divert from the main Camino, for cycling is preferable to go along the Ria of Vigo, and avoid the industrial area. You will end the day at Vigo, entering via Vigo’s parks and gardens.

Start your journey going from Vigo to Redondela where you might ride in a very dense urban area. In Redondela leave the Ria of Vigo behind and go inland, crossing several medieval bridges. On the way you will pass Pontevedra, a town with a beautiful historical center. Across the roman bridge, you will enter the forest of Reiris y Lombo da Maceira. After, the path will join with the N550 road and reach the thermal village of Caldas de Reis.

On the way, just off the main path, you can visit the Barosa river waterfall and old river mills, and when you arrive at your final destination, Caldas de Reis you can also enjoy the romans thermal bath, still in function.

Last day of this Pilgrimage goes by the woods and follows small beautiful rivers with water mills. In Padron there is the Iglesia de Santiago, the last stop before Santiago de Compostela. Take a moment to rest. Next to Padron is Iria Flavia, the place where the Body of the apostle came ashore into Galicia. 25km after, you will finally arrive in Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrimage destination since the 9th century. It’s now time to celebrate and have a great dinner in the surroundings.

ON THE TRAIL

Terrain: The terrain is relatively gentle, and you'll pass through scenic countryside, charming villages, and forests. Most will be following cycling lanes, or small roads and forest traks. the terrain is more hilly in Galicia while reaching the Portuguese camino in Redondela and onward. 

Food and Cuisine: You'll have the opportunity to enjoy the delicious Spanish  cuisine, including fresh seafood, pulpo a la gallega (octopus), and other regional dishes. Don't forget to try the local Albariño wine.

Waymarking: The route is well-marked with yellow arrows and scallop shell symbols, making it easy to navigate. When avoiding non cycling areas the booklet and gps track given have all the information.
