Stage 8 · Portuguese way
Information
The stage between Baiona and Vigo has an official distance of 26.8 kilometers, an estimated duration of 5 hours and 25 minutes, and is classified with low difficulty. It is a long day, although without major elevation changes.
The route leaves Baiona behind and continues toward Sabarís and A Ramallosa, where one of the day’s most historically important bridges is crossed. From here you enter Nigrán and the Way combines small roads, traditional paths, rural zones, and natural spaces.
The route crosses Nigrán municipality before entering Vigo via Saiáns. It then continues through San Miguel de Oia and Coruxo until reaching the Samil area.
From Samil, the recommended option follows the Lagares River upstream, using its riverfront promenade to advance toward the city. There is also a more traditional route via Coia to As Travesas.
The stage ends in Vigo, Galicia’s largest city. The arrival represents an important change from previous days, moving from small coastal nuclei to a fully urban environment.
Recommendation from The Way
Recommendation for Stage 8: Baiona – Vigo
Although official difficulty is low, the 26.8 kilometers make this a long stage. It is recommended to begin early and maintain a constant pace.
In Nigrán cultivation zones alternate with houses, small riverside forests, and some urbanized sections. The variety of surfaces makes the route entertaining, but the distance is felt at the day’s end.
Upon reaching Samil it is wise to pay attention to signage. The option via the Lagares River promenade allows avoiding part of the urban traffic and offers a quieter entry toward Vigo.
The stage ends in a city with numerous services, so it is easy to organize rest and reserve time to know the historic center.
Stage profile
The stage is approximately 26.8 kilometers with low overall difficulty. The profile is relatively gentle throughout, with no major ascents. The highest elevations do not exceed 100–120 meters.
The terrain varies considerably throughout the day. The first section combines traditional paths, small roads, and rural routes; in Vigo’s approach urbanized areas increase, and the final section uses the Lagares River promenade for access to the city center.
Estimated walking time is about 5 hours and 25 minutes, though with stops and time to visit points of interest, the day easily extends to 6 or 7 hours.
