A Guarda
❯Santa María de Oia
Stage 6 · Portuguese way
Information
The stage between A Guarda and Santa María de Oia covers approximately 16.7 kilometers on the Portuguese Way. It is a relatively short day, with low difficulty and an estimated time of about 3 hours and 20 minutes of walking.
The Atlantic Ocean accompanies the pilgrim during much of the route. From A Guarda, the Way advances northward following the coast and crosses part of the municipalities of A Guarda, O Rosal, and Oia before reaching the monastery of Santa María de Oia.
A Guarda is the Portuguese Way by the Coast’s first Galician municipality. From the urban center, the route crosses the historic center and approaches the sea again, passing through the beaches of Fedorento and Area Grande.
Later, the route coincides for a section with the well-known Route of the Cetáreas, before entering O Rosal municipality. The passage through this municipality is brief, about three kilometers of coast, and crosses the area of Portecelo and San Xián.
From Portecelo begins the final section toward Oia. The Way continues near the sea via a practically flat route with few shaded areas. Arrival at Santa María de Oia is marked by its Cistercian monastery, situated beside the ocean.
Recommendation from The Way
Recommendation for Stage 6: A Guarda – Santa María de Oia
Although the complete stage is classified with low difficulty, the first section between A Guarda and Portecelo is somewhat more demanding than the final part. It is wise to walk peacefully and not rely solely on the distance.
One of the most important aspects is the lack of shade. Much of the route advances beside the ocean and through open areas, so in warmer months it is recommended to carry sufficient water and sun protection.
The distance allows doing the day without rushing and reserving time to enjoy the beaches, the Portecelo area, and the monastery of Santa María de Oia.
If time is available before beginning, Santa Trega Hill can also be visited. It is not on the direct route toward Oia, but preserves an important castro-Roman settlement and offers wide views over the Miño mouth, Portugal, and the Atlantic.
Itinerary

· A Guarda
The stage begins in A Guarda, the Portuguese Way by the Coast’s first Galician locality. From the urban center, the Way crosses the historic center and heads toward the Atlantic again.
The route passes through the Clock Square area and the Church of Santa María before continuing toward the beaches.
.
· Beaches of Fedorento and Area Grande
Upon leaving A Guarda’s center behind, the Way passes through the beaches of Fedorento and Area Grande, two small coves open to the ocean. From this area the route begins following the coastline more continuously.
.
· Route of the Cetáreas
In this part, the Way coincides for a section with the Route of the Cetáreas. Cetáreas are old stone constructions situated in the intertidal zone that were used to keep shellfish alive before sale.
On A Guarda’s coast remains of several of these installations are still preserved, used from the late nineteenth century until the 1970s.
.
· Section through O Rosal
The Way then enters O Rosal and covers approximately three kilometers of its coast. The route passes through the area of the traditional nuclei of Portecelo and San Xián, situated between the Atlantic and the slopes of the A Groba mountain range.
Km 10,8
· Portecelo
Portecelo marks the end of the first major section of the stage. It is a small nucleus situated beside the sea and one of the main reference points of the Way as it passes through O Rosal.
From here about 5.9 kilometers remain to Oia. The Way continues northward following the coast, via a flat section with few shaded areas.
Km 16,7
· Santa María de Oia
The stage ends beside the Monastery of Santa María de Oia, situated practically facing the Atlantic.
The monastery’s church was built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and preserves Cistercian architecture characteristics, although its current facade is Baroque. The ensemble was enlarged and fortified during later centuries due to its strategic position facing the sea.
Beside the monastery is found the Arrabal Neighborhood, formed by narrow streets, small plazas, and traditional houses.
